TSRT Projects

Project Title

Community Music Sarajevo

Reference

BO/96/03

Status

In progress

Description

The general principle of community music is to create opportunities for people - of all ages, abilities and needs and without discrimination - to participate in music making and listening. Community Music Sarajevo (CoMuSa) believes that beyond the immediate satisfaction and enjoyment that comes from music making and listening, music can be an important socio-educational process and an excellent medium for therapeutic intervention for a range of behavioural disorders.

Location

Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina

Duration

24 months

Objectives

  • to provide a programme of music therapy workshops in institutions for people with special needs in and around Sarajevo (at Pazaric Psychiatric Institute, Vladimir Nazor Special School Hrasno, Mjedanica School for Mentally Handicapped Children, Bjelave Orphanage, National Centre for Blind and Partially Sighted People).
  • to provide Sarajevo with a community music centre, in turn providing employment and resources to workers in the community music industry, including training and access to concert production facilities, rehearsal facilities, instrument loan and soon a recording studio.
  • ultimately, CoMuSa should establish itself as a fully independent local organisation in partnership with the University of Sarajevo. TSRT estimates that this will become possible in early 1998. TSRT is committed to maintaining and expanding this unique and invaluable project.
